Àlex Hinojo has been appointed Secretary General of OpenEU. In this capacity, Hinojo will lead the OpenEU Secretariat, representing the alliance, overseeing its activity plan, ensuring the approval and quality of deliverables, and addressing key issues such as delays, risks, or quality concerns by escalating them to the Rectors’ Council and Executive Board. Additionally, he will manage the Secretariat’s staff and maintain direct communication with the European Commission regarding alliance matters.

Àlex Hinojo joins OpenEU from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), where he served as Director of Communication for Research and Knowledge Transfer. Hinojo is a cultural manager and digital strategist with expertise in open knowledge and digital transformation. Previously, he served as Director of Strategic Projects at the Institut Ramon Llull, where he worked to promote Catalan language and culture internationally. A prominent member of the Wikimedia movement, Hinojo has led initiatives to increase cultural and linguistic diversity on Wikipedia. He has also collaborated with numerous cultural institutions to advance open access and digital innovation.

The OpenEU Secretariat is the institutionalized cooperation instrument of the OpenEU consortium. It is tasked with ensuring the effective and efficient management of the Alliance, including quality assurance, communication, and financial oversight. The Secretariat also prepares and executes external funding applications and provides operational support to OpenEU partners. It acts as the primary point of contact with the European Commission for matters related to the Alliance.
