OpenEU, the European alliance of open and distance universities, took part in the “Choose Europe for Science” event, held on May 5th at Sorbonne University, Paris. This high-level meeting, promoted by French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, highlighted the importance of positioning Europe as a global hub for attracting researchers and scientists.

Representing OpenEU was Prof. Dr. Margrét Jónsdóttir Njarðvík, Rector of Bifröst University in Iceland. The event brought together representatives from numerous European University Alliances to discuss the strategic role of universities in fostering scientific excellence and reinforcing Europe’s leadership in research and innovation.

Strategic announcements

During the opening session, Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed Europe’s strong commitment to science and innovation. She announced a €500 million funding initiative through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) and the European Research Council (ERC). This funding aims to foster research, attract top international scientists, and support the integration of global researchers into Europe’s scientific community.

Looking ahead: European University Alliances at the forefront

A dedicated workshop titled The Future of European University Alliances: Progress and Developments followed the opening addresses. Key stakeholders from across Europe gathered to discuss strategies for enhancing the global attractiveness of European higher education, equipping young people with competitive skills, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of university alliances.

Additionally, representatives from FOREU4ALL, of which OpenEU is also a member, participated actively in the event. Prof. Dr. Ludovic Thilly (Université de Poitiers, EC2U Alliance, FOREU4ALL) and Univ.-Prof. Dr. Beatrix Busse (Universität zu Köln, EUniWell - European University for Well-Being, FOREU4ALL) contributed to the discussions, emphasizing the vital role of European University Alliances in shaping the future of higher education, science, and sustainable well-being for both people and the planet.

Through its participation in the “Choose Europe for Science” event, OpenEU reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a more open, competitive, and sustainable European Research and Higher Education Area, while strengthening collaboration and innovation across European universities.
