As part of the OpenEU Alliance’s mission to connect higher education with society, our member Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) hosted a workshop on “The SDGs and Local Challenges” on 14 October. The session brought together researchers, public institutions, companies, and social organizations to explore how universities can collaborate with local stakeholders to co-create solutions that address global and regional challenges.

This OpenEU workshop focused on how higher education can act as a driver for social innovation and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through open, collaborative research and innovation. Participants identified key priorities for building a fairer, more digital, and sustainable society — from improving access to quality education and promoting inclusive digital transformation, to advancing climate action and strengthening democracy and European values.

The event also emphasized the importance of shared agendas between universities and social stakeholders to design policies and strategies that make knowledge a true engine of transformation.

As Pastora Martínez Samper, UOC’s Commissioner for International Action and OpenEU Coordinator, highlighted:

“OpenEU wants to pool the collective knowledge of our 10 universities and partners to tackle global challenges, while thinking and acting locally.”

Organized by the OpenEU Office at the UOC, in collaboration with the Knowledge Transfer, Entrepreneurship and Open Science department and the Alliances, Community and Equity department, the workshop forms part of OpenEU’s work on research and innovation in digital education. Its goal is to create an open and collaborative lab connecting universities, society, and industry to design tech-based educational solutions with tangible social impact.
