Call for Applications: First OpenEU Summer School 2026

PhD candidates from across Europe are invited to The Hague to debate resilience, innovation, and sustainability.

The Open Universiteit (the Netherlands) is thrilled to announce the first-ever OpenEU Summer School, held in the framework of OpenEU. Taking place from 28 to 30 August 2026 at the University Campus Spui in The Hague, this event serves as a transdisciplinary platform for the researchers of the future.

A Focus on Resilience and Sustainability

The programme centres on how innovation and learning drive resilience and sustainability in individuals, organisations, cities and society at large. PhD candidates from all disciplines are welcomed to present their research results and share relevant insights for addressing pressing modern societal challenges.

Programme highlights:

  • 28 August: Welcome and registration for PhD candidates, followed by workshops on academic publishing, open science and more.

  • 29 August: Research presentation day featuring keynote speakers and parallel research sessions. The day concludes with a social programme and dinner.

  • 30 August: Continued research sessions and an open discussion on ‘Seeking Sustainable Solutions’ before the official closing of the conference.

Practical Information:

  • Participation Fee: There is no participation fee for this event.

  • Institutional Support: Each OpenEU member can send 2–3 candidates. Travel and hotel expenses will be provided by your own institution.

How to Apply:

Interested PhD candidates should contact their own institution to apply. All applications require the formal approval of the candidate’s supervisor and must include:

  • CV

  • Motivational abstract

  • Envisioned title for their presentation.

  • Application Deadline: 29 May 2026

  • Internal Partner Selection: 1–3 June

  • Submission of candidates to W4 Panel: 3–4 June

  • Final Publication of Results: Friday 5 June
